The significant and rapid advances in technology which has transformed peoples lives over the past few decades. Society has moved from analogue to mechanical technology based on digital, electronic technology and communication.

The idea that physical distance and time differences are made much less of an issue in communication between people, which gives people the ability to create and maintain much stronger social relationships. Almost as easy as if these relationships were in a village where everyone could easily visit each other whenever they wished.

Carter - Cybercity - Had over one million registered users when the study was conducted (June 2004). It has the characteristics of a normal city. Studied how people put just as much effort to retaining online relationships as face to face ones. Used interviews, participant observation questionnaires.

Boellstorff - Second life - used participant observation and interviews to study how people form relationships, create communities and identities online. Virtual communities are real spaces for social interaction. People could get married, start businesses or have religious services.
