What is the purpose of a range card?
To record sectors of fire and key engagement data for a weapon position.
What DA Form is used as the standard range card?
DA Form 5517.
What are the two types of range cards?
Final Protective Line (FPL) and Principal Direction of Fire (PDF).
What is an FPL?
A predetermined line of fire used to stop enemy assaults.
What is a PDF?
A direction of fire covering likely enemy avenues of approach.
What information is required on a range card?
Sectors of fire, grid coordinates, TRPS, dead space, MEL, FPL, WRP, limits, and magnetic north.
What is a sector of fire?
The area a weapon system is assigned to cover.
What are TRPS?
Target Reference Points.
Why are TRPS used?
To identify and engage targets quickly.
What is dead space?
An area that cannot be covered by direct fire.
What is the Maximum Engagement Line (MEL)?
The limit of effective engagement range.
What is a Weapons Reference Point (WRP)?
A reference feature used to position weapons and personnel.
Why is magnetic north plotted on a range card?
To orient the card with the terrain.
What do left and right limits define?
The boundaries of the assigned sector of fire.
What should be recorded for left and right limits?
Azimuth and distance.
What is grazing fire?
Fire that remains close to the ground and covers exposed terrain.
What is a primary sector of fire?
The main area assigned for a weapon to cover.
What is a secondary sector of fire?
An alternate area assigned for coverage.
What is a Restrictive Fire Line (RFL)?
A line beyond which fires cannot engage without coordination.
What information is entered in the data section?
Direction, deflection, range, ammunition, and description.
What should the remarks block contain?
WRP data and other important notes.
Why are range cards important?
They support planning, control, and effective engagement of targets.
