Glassware safety

  • alert the teacher of broken glass

  • hot and cold glass look the same, handle all glassware with care/proper protection

  • alert the teacher of chipped glass and do not use it

  • Wash glassware after each use

  • put glassware towards the center of the lab table

  • use heat gloves or beaker/test tube tongs

Chemical safety

  • follow all procedures and do not deviate from them

  • wear proper protective equipment-gloves, goggles, apron

  • do not return chemicals to the stock container

  • ask your teacher how to dispose of chemical after lab; do not pour down the drain

  • alert teacher of a chemical spill or if a chemical gets on your skin/clothing

  • no eat/drinking or chewing gum during a lab

  • only use the waft method to smell chemicals

  • familiarize yourself with the location of the fire safety equipment in the classroom

  • fire extinguisher, fire blanket, shower, fire alarm, fire exits, first aid kit, gas shut off valve

  • never leave a table with an open flame, designate one person to stay at the table

  • do not put flammable items near a flame

  • tie hair back when working with flames
