Active Transport
Movement of materials into or out of a cell using the cell’s energy (ATP).
Passive Transport
Movement of materials across the cell membrane without using energy.
Cell Membrane
A thin, flexible layer that surrounds a cell, controlling what enters and leaves.
Hypertonic Solution
A solution with more solute outside the cell than inside, causing water to move out and the cell to shrink.
Hypotonic Solution
A solution with less solute outside the cell than inside, causing water to move in and the cell to swell or burst.
Isotonic Solution
A solution with the same amount of solute inside and outside the cell, resulting in no change in cell size.
Solution
A mixture of two or more things where one dissolves in another.
Diffusion
The spreading out of particles from where there are a lot to where there are fewer.
Osmosis
A special kind of diffusion where water moves through a semi-permeable membrane.
Semi-permeable (Selectively Permeable)
A membrane that only lets certain things pass through.
Homeostasis
The ability of an organism or cell to keep things balanced inside, even when the outside changes.
