Medications: Statins
Inhibit synthesis of cholesterol in liver
Liver removes more LDL cholesterol from blood
Slight increase in HDL cholesterol
PTT may increase with combined use of Warfarin
Monitor LFTs and for rhabdomyolysis (muscle pain, dark urine)
Medication: Fibric Acid Derivatives (Fenofibrate, Gemfibrozil)
Aids to remove VLDL (very LDL)
Lowers triglycerides, increases HDL levels
Monitor for s/s bleeding with combined use of Warfarin
Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis and elevated liver enzymes when combined with statin
Medication: Antiplatelet
Aspirin: Decreases platelet aggregation (clumping), minor inhibition of vasoconstriction. Watch for GI upset, GI ulceration, tinnitus (ringing in the ears, a sign of aspirin toxicity)
