Medications: Statins

  • Inhibit synthesis of cholesterol in liver

  • Liver removes more LDL cholesterol from blood

  • Slight increase in HDL cholesterol

  • PTT may increase with combined use of Warfarin

  • Monitor LFTs and for rhabdomyolysis (muscle pain, dark urine)

  • Aids to remove VLDL (very LDL)

  • Lowers triglycerides, increases HDL levels

  • Monitor for s/s bleeding with combined use of Warfarin

  • Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis and elevated liver enzymes when combined with statin

Medication: Antiplatelet

Aspirin: Decreases platelet aggregation (clumping), minor inhibition of vasoconstriction. Watch for GI upset, GI ulceration, tinnitus (ringing in the ears, a sign of aspirin toxicity)
