Diploid
A complete set of chromosomes represented as 2n, one set inherited from the mother and one set from the father.
Haploid
Refers to half the genetic material, represented as n, found in gametes.
Mitosis
Cell division resulting in two diploid identical cells, used for growth and replacement.
Meiosis
Cell division resulting in four non-identical haploid cells, used for the formation of gametes.
Genotype
The genes present in an organism.
Phenotype
The expression of the genes in an organism; for example, HH may present as not hairy, while hh may result in hairy.
Alleles
Different variations of the same gene, such as H and h for the hairy gene.
Crossover
A process during meiosis where homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange pieces, leading to genetic variation.
Sister chromatids
Duplicated chromosomes that are attached at the centromere before separation into different cells.
