Meiosis
a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes.
Mitosis
cell division in which produces body cells in an organism.
Diploid (2n)
containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
Haploid (n)
A cell having only one complete set of chromosomes. Half the number of chromosomes as a diploid cell.
body cells
Any cells in the body other than reproductive cells
Gametes
sex cells
Gametogenesis
the process in which cells undergo meiosis to form gametes.
Spermatogenesis
production of sperm cells (in testes)
Oogenesis
the production, growth, and maturation of an egg, or ovum in the ovaries
polar bodies
Cells produced in females that do not participate in reproduction. 3 are produced during one cycle of meiosis.
Sperm
Male sex cell
egg (ovum)
Female sex cell
ferilization
process when the sperm cell unites with a female egg cell
genetic variation
Differences among individuals in the composition of their genes or other DNA segments
crossing over
the exchange of genes between homologous chromosomes, resulting in a mixture of parental characteristics in offspring.
Gonads
sex glands (ovaries and testes)
sexual reproduction
A reproductive process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents
