Trust vs. Mistrust
This is the first stage of Erikson's psychosocial development occurring from birth to 18 months where infants learn basic trust through care and affection.
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
This stage occurs from 18 months to 3 years, where children learn to do things for themselves.
Initiative vs. Guilt
This stage takes place from ages 3 to 5 and involves children planning activities and feeling secure in their ability to lead.
Industry vs. Inferiority
This stage occurs from ages 6 to 11, where children develop a sense of competence in achieving goals.
Identity vs. Role Confusion
This stage happens during adolescence (ages 11 to 18) where individuals explore their identity and roles in society.
Intimacy vs. Isolation
This stage involves young adulthood (ages 18 to 40) focusing on forming intimate relationships.
Generativity vs. Stagnation
This middle adulthood stage (ages 40 to 65) revolves around contributing to society and helping the next generation.
Integrity vs. Despair
The final stage at late adulthood (ages 65 and up) where individuals reflect on their lives and either feel fulfilled or regretful.
Psychoanalysis
A method of psychological treatment that focuses on bringing the unconscious mind into awareness.
Neo-Freudian Psychologist
A psychologist influenced by Freud but who has developed their own theories that place less emphasis on sexual drives. (Erik Erickson)
