Scale
Represents the ratio of distance on a map to the actual distance on the ground, such as 1:50000 where 1cm on the map equals 0.5km.
Direction
Shown by compass directions to indicate the position of one place in relation to another using the four main cardinal points (N, S, E, W) and 16 compass points.
Distance Indicators
Markers on a map that show the distance between towns, usually indicated on the left or right of the road.
Legends or Map Keys
A guide that explains the symbols used on a map, often using images to communicate facilities across different languages.
Map Grid References
A coordinate system consisting of vertical and horizontal lines on a map that helps the reader locate a specific place.
Equator
The 0∘ line of latitude that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
Hemispheres
Half of the Earth, typically divided into northern and southern halves by the equator.
North Pole
The northernmost point of the Earth.
South Pole
The southernmost point on the Earth.
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run parallel to the Equator.
Longitude (Meridians)
Imaginary lines that divide the Earth, running north to south from pole to pole and parallel to the Greenwich meridian.
Time Zones
Divisions of the world created to make working with time easier across different geographical areas.
Universal Time Coordinate (UTC)
A time standard where the time in each zone is taken from the reference time at the 0∘ longitude.
International Date Line (IDL)
The 180∘ line of longitude where crossing results in gaining or losing a calendar day.
Daylight Saving Time (DST)
The practice of turning the clock one hour ahead of local standard time at the beginning of summer to gain extra daylight hours.
Road Maps
Maps that show the roads connecting towns and cities, useful for calculating travel time to destinations.
Street Maps
Maps showing the layout of roads and streets in city centers, including facilities like police stations, hospitals, and hotels.
Political Maps
Maps that show the locations of the borders of countries, states, and provinces.
Physical Maps
Maps that show natural features such as mountains, rivers, and oceans using color to represent different elevations.
Specialist Maps
Thematic maps providing specialized information such as climate, train routes, or the location of airports.
Electronic Maps
Digital map sources, such as Google Maps and Google Street View, used for navigation and viewing locations online.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
A system that receives data from satellites to generate maps in real time, often built into smartphones.
Credit Cards
A popular form of payment that uses bank credit to withdraw money, make direct payments, or guarantee bookings like car hire.
Debit Cards
A payment card that uses the cardholder's own funds via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) directly from their account.
Speed Point Machines
Devices used by retailers to register payments by swiping a client's card and requiring a PIN or signature.
Domestic Tourism
Travel by people within their own country, such as a South African family traveling between different provinces.
Economy Benefits
Positive impacts of domestic tourism including job creation, poverty elimination, and infrastructure upgrades through local spending.
Sho’t Left Campaign
A domestic marketing campaign by South African Tourism that promotes a culture of affordable local holiday travel for all South Africans.
Inter-provincial travel
Traveling between different provinces, such as moving from the Free State to the Northern Cape.
Intra-provincial travel
Traveling within the borders of a single province, such as movement between two towns in the Free State.
